Create a Tax Category

Create a tax category at organisation or location scope so it can be selected later on products and used by POS ticket lines.

In this article

Tax categories keep product tax handling consistent across catalogue setup and POS operations. The record is created once in the selected scope and then becomes available when products need a tax category.

This guide uses the Harbor Soho documentation context. The current create form shows Spanish field labels, so screenshots should preserve `Nombre`, `Porcentaje`, `Descripción` and `País` exactly as they appear in the app.

Before you start

  • You are signed in with an organisation selected, such as Harbor Demo Group.
  • For a location-level category, a location is selected, such as Harbor Soho.
  • You have `catalog:manage` in the selected organisation or location context.
  • For en-GB documentation captures, do not show a successful GB submission until the GB country-support gap is resolved; the verified form defaults to `ES` and the backend rejects unsupported country codes.

Instructions

  1. 1.

    Choose the catalogue scope

Open catalogues at the level where the tax category should live. Use the location catalogues for a Harbor Soho-only category, or the organisation catalogues for a category shared from organisation scope. The app derives the scope from the route, not from a form field.

  2. 2.

    Open Tax categories

Select the `Tax categories` tab. Users with `catalog:manage` see `Create Tax category`; users with catalogue view access can list records but cannot start creation.

  3. 3.

    Start a new category

Press `Create Tax category`. The create route opens without an `id`, so the shared catalogue item screen treats it as a new tax category and applies the same context and permission checks as the list.

  4. 4.

    Enter the tax details

Complete the required name, percentage and country fields, and add a description if useful. In the current UI these fields appear as `Nombre`, `Porcentaje`, `Descripción` and `País`.

  5. 5.

    Create the category

Submit with `Create Tax category`. The app trims the name, parses the percentage, uppercases the country code and creates the record in the selected organisation or location scope.

  6. 6.

    Use it on products later

After creation, the category is available for product setup and can flow into POS ticket items through those products. Creating the category does not update existing products or tickets by itself.

Validations and limits

  • Name is required after trimming spaces.
  • Percentage must parse as a decimal value and the backend accepts values from `0` to `100`.
  • Country is required in the UI, normalised before saving and rejected if unsupported.
  • The saved record is either organisation-scoped or location-scoped, not both.
  • Without `catalog:manage`, the create button is hidden and direct access to the form is blocked.
  • A duplicate name in the same organisation or location scope is blocked by database uniqueness, but the exact duplicate-name UI message was not verified.
  • Tax categories do not support images and are not available in the catalogue copy action.

Expected result

The tax category is created in the selected scope, the list is refreshed and the category can be selected later on product records for POS and ticket tax handling.
